Introduction to Big Bear
There is considerable confusion about the layout of the Big Bear valley
for hikers and this page will help you get the most from your Big Bear layover.
There are two ends of town in the valley, Big Bear City and Big Bear Lake. Big
Bear City is more of a residential district with a few shops along the main
highway which has no sidewalks! Big Bear Lake about 3 miles west of Big Bear
City is pedestrian friendly with sidewalks everywhere and has the following
resources along 2 miles of Big Bear Boulevard:
2 full size supermarkets: Vons / Stater Bros
3 pharmacies: CVS, RITE AID, Walgreens
Kmart (affordable hiking boots)
Payless Shoes
Big Bear Visitors Center
Tons of restaurants: 5 pizza joints, Sizzler, Denny's, a Chinese Buffet, the
Grizzly Manor Cafe (largest breakfasts anywhere!), all major fast food restaurants
and much more!
2 Movie Theaters
10 bars/pubs

the street from the hostel)
Historically the Big Bear City fire department offered free showers and camping
to hikers.
( They may still give showers, but there is no more free camping.)
The Big Bear City post office (92314) is open to pick up packages on Saturday
for 1 hour.
The Big Bear Lake post office (92315) is open for 2 hours on Saturday with a
full service counter.
